On Friday 27th our competition season opened with Round One of our Print and PDI Leagues. PDI stands for Projected Digital Image, camera-club speak for digital images, which are shown and judged on competition night via a projector.

Members chose their class for the year – General or Advanced – and entered up to two images in each league.

The judge for the evening was Graeme Sleeman, who gave his feedback on every image entered. As the images are judged anonymously, feedback is given without knowledge of who took the photograph, why/how it was taken or the choices made in post-production.

Here are some of the photographs that came out tops on the night – and to introduce them, here are some thoughts from Club Member, Tony Coombes.

The creative skills of Overton Photographic Club were well in evidence in Round One of the internal club competition on Friday evening.

Natural history images scored particularly well in the advanced PDI section with yet another stunning kingfisher shot from Alan Willis. Brian Chivers’ in-your-face view of a wasp drinking had amazing colours and clarity. And the picture of a turtle at 24 metres under the Red Sea showed the beauty of the animal as well as Mark Davies’ technical skill.

Aside from the nature pictures there were some great landscape scenes in vivid colour, pastel and monochrome.

Monochrome urban landscapes were also well represented, including shots of Oxford, an intricate wrought iron stairway and architectural images of Kings Cross and Thames bridges.

The weird shapes and terrific colours of John Hodge’s Science Museum also found favour with the judge, unlike the crescent moon in his skyscraper shot, which the judge unjustly declared suspicious. John’s tailor (well, the photo of a tailor, I mean, I don’t know where he gets his suits made) scored well in the print section.
